Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel is seeking a rehearing over regulators’ approval of a 20-year electric service contract between DTE Energy and Google for a hyperscale data center in Van Buren Township. Nessel argues the contract could shift costs to other DTE customers, despite the Michigan Public Service Commission’s conclusion that ratepayers would not bear the expense.

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel filed a petition for rehearing challenging the Michigan Public Service Commission’s approval of a 20-year electric service contract between DTE Energy and Google. The contract would supply power to Google’s planned hyperscale data center in Van Buren Township outside Detroit.

The commission said the agreement protects other DTE Electric customers from added costs, but Nessel contends that aggregating costs and benefits over the contract’s full term could still force ratepayers to subsidize the facility in some years. She is asking regulators to reconcile the contract annually, while the commission declined comment and Google did not respond.
