The Bucksport Town Council voted to advance a proposed 180-day moratorium on commercial data centers. The moratorium would allow the town to study potential energy, water and environmental impacts, with a second reading and public hearing scheduled for Oct. 8.

The Bucksport Town Council advanced a proposed 180-day freeze on commercial data center development after a public discussion on Sept. 24. The proposal would give the town time to assess energy, water and environmental impacts before any formal project application is submitted.

Bucksport’s Community and Economic Development Director said an interested developer recently toured the former paper mill site. One councilor opposed the moratorium, arguing that smaller data centers could help rebuild the town’s industrial tax base. The ordinance is scheduled for a second reading and formal public hearing on Oct. 8.
