A data center has not been proposed or confirmed near Eastridge Elementary School in Amarillo, despite questions about possible discussions involving Amazon. City staff said the property is for sale and is reviewing land-use rules because data centers are not currently defined in the city charter.

The Panhandle 1st Coalition asked about reports that Amazon management might be discussing construction of a data center near Eastridge Elementary School in Amarillo. City officials said the property, which was rezoned from agricultural to light industrial, is being offered for sale in three parts, and staff has not been informed of plans for a data center or other development there.

Councilmember Tim Reid raised the issue, while Deputy City Manager Andrew Freeman said a data center remains possible but is not currently being built. Amarillo staff and the Planning and Zoning Board are updating land-use rules to define data centers and are considering requiring a specific use permit rather than allowing them by right.
