Topeka City Manager Dr. Robert Perez provided an update on the city's budget discussions and potential data center development during an appearance on Eye on NE Kansas. Perez confirmed that the governing body's upcoming meeting will cover the Topeka Police Department's budget, particularly the provision of school resource officers in USD 501 schools, as their current contract is nearing expiration.
Of significant interest to the governing body is the proposed data center project by Compass Datacenters, which is seeking to establish a facility just outside Topeka's city limits. In response to this, the city has scheduled a special work session for August 19. This session will allow city leaders to engage directly with Compass Datacenters representatives to understand their plans and to consult with Evergy officials regarding the potential infrastructure demands and impacts of the proposed development.
