Ilion residents renew concerns over proposed AI data center
Residents in Ilion, New York, expressed renewed concerns about a proposed AI data center at a Village Board meeting, citing issues like water and electricity consumption, noise, and environmental impacts. The public opposition includes a planned peaceful demonstration. The property where the data center is planned is owned by a company named Turin.
The Ilion Village Board moved its regular meeting to the Veteran's Memorial Auditorium to accommodate 26 residents who once again voiced concerns about a proposed AI data center at the former Remington Arms complex. Mayor John P. Stephens oversaw the public comment period, ensuring adherence to meeting rules.
Colleen Maxwell of Newport urged Ilion residents to direct their concerns about the data center, reportedly planned for a building owned by Turin, to the Herkimer County Industrial Development Agency (IDA) and the County Legislature. Residents raised a variety of issues, including high water usage, electricity consumption, noise pollution, potential environmental impact, health concerns, and the anticipated limited number of long-term local jobs.
A peaceful demonstration against the data center is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 17, in front of the Municipal Building, following the village election. The board also conducted other municipal business, including personnel changes, equipment purchases, and reappointments.
