The Florence County Board in Wisconsin unanimously approved a moratorium on land uses associated with data center development. The pause will give the Florence County Zoning Committee up to 18 months, or longer if necessary, to update the county’s 20-year comprehensive plan and review zoning and land-use policies related to data centers and battery energy storage systems.
Board Chair Chad Hedmark said officials were concerned about the long-term use of large data center buildings if they become obsolete or vacant. During the same meeting, the board also voted to end use of Florence County’s two active Flock cameras, which will be covered until they are removed.
