Residents of Young County are expressing strong reactions to a proposed data center project in Graham City, as developers reportedly seek approvals before new state legislation takes effect in January. This legislation aims to limit where certain data centers can be built in rural areas, sparking concerns among the community.

During a recent City Council meeting, resident Lori Kramer urged councilors to delay any decision until state lawmakers have an opportunity to act on the proposed bill. Kramer emphasized that the developers' deadline does not necessitate an emergency decision from the council and suggested that waiting for the legislation would be a more fiscally responsible approach. She argued that if Graham truly is an ideal location for data centers, developers would still be interested a year from now, allowing the state legislature time to implement controls.

Conversely, other attendees argued that the project could bring long-term opportunities and that communities have historically progressed by embracing new technologies. The City Council voted to allocate funds into escrow to cover consultant fees, with these costs to be reimbursed by the developer, Headwaters. However, the council did not make a final decision on Headwaters' letter of intent during the meeting, deferring it for future consideration.
