Hermantown city officials held a session to discuss a proposed tax abatement for a Google data center. The abatement would see Google pay taxes in full, with the city then returning nearly 85% of that payment over time, while keeping a base amount plus an extra $100,000 annually. A public hearing is scheduled for next week, where residents and the 'Stop the Hermantown Data Center' group are expected to voice their opposition.

Hermantown city leaders recently met to discuss a proposed Google data center project, focusing on property tax reductions and exemptions. Chad Ronchetti, the city's Economic Development Director, explained the proposed tax abatement agreement. Under this agreement, Google would pay its taxes in full during the construction phase of the data center. The city would then refund approximately 85% of that payment to Google over the project's development time.
Ronchetti highlighted that the city and school district would ultimately benefit financially. He stated that before the repayment, the city would retain the amount of money currently paid in taxes by existing property owners, plus an additional $100,000. He argued that the full financial picture for the city and school district shows a net gain, as they would receive millions more than the amount abated to Google over the decades. Google would also cover utility construction costs near the proposed site.
Despite the projected benefits, some Hermantown residents remain unconvinced. Members of the 'Stop the Hermantown Data Center' group attended the session and are expected to attend a public hearing next week. This group has stated they believe the economic benefits do not outweigh the possible damages the data center project may bring to residents. Google representatives are expected to be present at the upcoming city council meeting and public hearing.
