Google has been revealed as the owner of the 2.7-gigawatt data center previously known as Project Jade, now Project Tembo, located near Cheyenne, Wyoming. The massive campus is undergoing site plan amendments with Laramie County, with a hearing scheduled for an additional office support facility permit. The project highlights Cheyenne's emergence as a tech hub, drawing concerns about infrastructure planning.

Project Tembo, formerly known as Project Jade, Wyoming's largest data center, has been officially identified as a Google-owned and operated facility. The 2.7-gigawatt campus will be located on 716 acres in the Switchgrass Industrial Park, 8 miles south of Cheyenne in Laramie County. The project includes four data center halls, an office hub, and logistics buildings, with a planned completion by 2031. Google's wholly owned subsidiary, Jupiter Star Holdings, LLC, is overseeing construction, taking over from Crusoe, who was asked to "pause" construction by the client.

Tallgrass Energy and Black Hills Energy are confirmed partners in providing power to the facility, combining resources from Black Hills Energy, fuel cells, and Tallgrass's power plant to a dedicated substation. Wastewater treatment will be handled on-site through evaporative lagoon storage, with connection to the municipal system deemed not cost-effective.

Details about Google's involvement emerged from a June 30 site-plan amendment filed with Laramie County's Planning and Development. The amendment also includes a new office support facility, which was not part of the original conditional-use permit for Project Jade. A hearing for this required permit is scheduled for August 13 at the Laramie County Commission chambers. The revelation of Google's ownership comes as Cheyenne continues to attract major tech companies, including Microsoft and Meta, leading to questions from local observers, such as Councilman Larry Wolfe, about the city's ability to keep pace with data center and power infrastructure planning.
