A new analysis of emissions permits in Virginia indicates that the 10,500 generators attached to data centers in Northern Virginia produce enough pollution to harm public health, even with infrequent use. The study reviewed permits for 132 operating sites and noted an additional 19 approved data centers since late 2024. These findings highlight growing environmental concerns associated with the rapid data center expansion in the region.

A new analysis of emissions permits reveals that the 10,500 generators connected to data centers across Virginia are generating sufficient pollution to pose a risk to public health, even when operated infrequently. The study, conducted by the Washington Post, scrutinized permits and emissions data for 132 data center sites operating in Northern Virginia up to the end of 2024.

Since the conclusion of that review period, an additional 19 data centers have received approval for development within the Northern Virginia region. These findings underscore increasing environmental concerns amidst the rapid expansion of data center infrastructure in the state, particularly regarding air quality and community well-being.
