NextEra Energy has announced a $67 billion agreement to acquire Dominion Energy, a move driven primarily by the escalating demand for electricity from large data centers powering AI technology. Dominion Energy is a key service provider for the expansive Data Center Alley in Ashburn, Virginia, which hosts nearly 300 data centers for major tech companies like Google, Meta, and Amazon.

John Ketchum, NextEra's Chairman, President, and CEO, stated that the acquisition is vital because "scale matters more than ever" in meeting rapidly rising electricity demand and achieving operational efficiencies. The combined entity would create one of the largest utility providers on the U.S. East Coast.

The deal is complex and subject to numerous regulatory approvals, including from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and state commissions in Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. This approval process is anticipated to take up to 18 months. If completed, NextEra would own 74.5% of the new company, with Dominion shareholders holding the remaining 25.5%. The merged company initially plans to maintain dual headquarters in Richmond, Virginia, and Juno Beach, Florida, with an additional operational headquarters in South Carolina.
