Meta has opened its first AI-focused data center in Temple, Texas, an integral part of its $1.2 billion campus in Central Texas. The Austin American-Statesman was granted a behind-the-scenes tour of the facility, providing a detailed look at its operations.
The data center is structured with giant industrial hallways surrounding four data halls, each housing hundreds of millions of computer chips powering Meta's various platforms. These halls contain numerous server racks, with each rack holding at least two servers, and each server equipped with eight AI-supportive chips from either AMD or Nvidia. To manage the significant heat generated, Meta employs a closed-loop water system that recycles water for cooling the computer chips before expelling the heat into the atmosphere. Additionally, to address the intense noise levels, the data center features thick concrete walls around the data halls and the facility's perimeter.
The opening of this advanced facility comes at a time when data centers are a contentious issue across Texas. Residents are increasingly advocating for city and state lawmakers to halt the rapid expansion of the data center industry within the state.
