Residents and community organizations are preparing a public presentation in Ithaca, New York, to voice their opposition to a proposed 300-megawatt artificial intelligence data center near Cayuga Lake. The event, titled "No Data Center on Cayuga Lake," is scheduled for June 25 at the First Unitarian Society of Ithaca. Organizers plan to detail potential environmental and community harms associated with data centers and the specific project proposed by TeraWulf, a bitcoin mining company transitioning to AI data centers.

The proposed facility is slated for the site of a former coal plant in the town of Lansing. Speakers at the event will include Samuel George, a Bear Clan leader of the Cayuga Nation; Ken Wolkin, president of FLX Strong; Steve Daly, managing attorney with Citizen Environmental Law; New York Assemblymember Anna Kelles; Dan Lamb, deputy supervisor of the town of Dryden; and Melissa Hoffman, an organizer with Food & Water Watch.

The presentation is co-sponsored by several local and environmental groups, including FLX Strong, Cayuga Lake Environmental Action Now, No Data Center FLX, Sustainable Finger Lakes, Seneca Lake Guardian, Food & Water Watch, and Sunrise Ithaca. The initiative underscores growing local concern regarding the impact of large-scale data center developments on natural resources and community welfare.
