Hutchinson forum seeks public input on data centers
Hutchinson and Reno County are hosting a community forum to gather public input on data center development. The forum will discuss potential zoning measures, state tax incentives, and resident concerns about water use, noise, and energy demand.
Hutchinson and Reno County residents are invited to a community forum on Tuesday, September 8, at 5:30 p.m. at the Shears Technology Center at Hutchinson Community College to provide input on data center development.
The forum aims to give residents a voice before local officials make long-term decisions regarding data center development. Hutchinson City Council member Stacy Goss will discuss planning and zoning measures for community protection, while State Sen. Mike Murphy will address Senate Bill 98, which established Kansas tax incentives for qualifying data centers. Jason Probst will also present best practices identified by the Bipartisan Policy Center.
The event will feature live, anonymous polling on residents' concerns, priorities, and values, with results displayed in real-time. Discussion will be focused to prevent confrontational exchanges seen in other communities. Participants can also submit specific questions and ideas online.
The forum comes as local officials are considering how to regulate data centers amidst concerns regarding water use, noise, energy demand, and impacts on surrounding properties.
