Union County Council has tabled a proposed tax break agreement for a 400-million-dollar data center project, codenamed "Project Alpaca", in the Midway Green Industrial Park. This decision allows more time for review and evaluation, and comes after public pushback influenced a similar data center project's withdrawal in Spartanburg County.

Union County leaders have decided to table tax breaks for a proposed 400-million-dollar data center project, known as "Project Alpaca". The county council voted to table the first reading of an ordinance for a Fee in Lieu Of Tax (FILOT) agreement for the project, which is planned for the Midway Green Industrial Park in Union. This action provides council members with more time to review and evaluate all aspects of the proposed development.
Council members stated they will not consider the project for now. They added that if Project Alpaca is reintroduced in the future, a public information meeting will be held before any decisions are made regarding a tax agreement. This development follows pushback from neighbors that led to a developer withdrawing a data center project in Spartanburg County earlier this year, after the Spartanburg County Council refused tax incentives for that project, codenamed "Project Sperro".
