Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear has declared that he will not support data center projects in the state unless developers fully cover associated costs and adhere to strict environmental regulations. This stance comes amid growing concerns from communities, particularly in Greenup and Boyd Counties, regarding the potential impacts of a proposed data center development.

The controversial project, planned for an industrial park serving Boyd, Carter, Elliott, Greenup, and Lawrence counties, is slated to eventually reach a capacity of one gigawatt, comparable to powering a city the size of San Francisco. Local residents have voiced worries about the facility leading to higher energy costs and excessive water consumption. There are also fears of potential leaks of organic compounds into the local water supply.

Governor Beshear emphasized that any data center looking to operate in Kentucky must independently finance 100% of its energy needs and rigorously comply with all state environmental laws and permitting requirements. He also stressed the importance of developers being transparent with communities about the investment size and the resulting tax revenue for schools, counties, and the state, while also proving there will be no environmental harm.
