Tammabattula highlights the strain on power grids and the environment from the immense energy demands of these facilities, citing the actions of major tech institutions like Microsoft, Meta, and Amazon Web Services (AWS) in expanding AI data centers nationally.
Tammabattula advocates for a "Responsible Compute" model, exemplified by BaRupOn's LAMP project in Texas. This approach involves developing dedicated behind-the-meter power generation and large-scale rainwater harvesting to minimize reliance on existing community resources. Additionally, the LAMP model includes investments in local emergency services, infrastructure, and STEM education to create lasting economic opportunities for residents. He emphasizes that communities are not inherently resistant to development but seek to understand the tradeoffs and benefits of large-scale projects.
The expert views moratoriums and permitting pauses imposed by various communities and a coalition of states as a critical signal for the industry to evolve its development model.
