Walls Planning Commission Denies Data Center Rezoning Request
The Walls Planning Commission has voted to deny a rezoning request for 1,200 acres of farmland to industrial use, a change residents feared would lead to a data center. The decision followed a public hearing with significant opposition, although the commission's vote is a recommendation that must be finalized by the Walls Mayor and Board of Aldermen.
The Walls Planning Commission recently denied a controversial rezoning request that aimed to convert approximately 1,200 acres of agricultural land to M-1 Light Industrial use. The application, filed by landowners Robert and Will Abbay of Abbay Ag Services, prompted strong community opposition, with many residents expressing concerns that the change would facilitate the construction of a data center.
A public hearing held at Walls Elementary School drew about 350 attendees, roughly a quarter of the town's population, highlighting the widespread local concern. Speakers largely opposed the rezoning, citing various reasons, while Will Abbay argued that industrial zoning would bring needed revenue and infrastructure to Walls, suggesting it as the "least invasive process to growth."
Commissioner Jimmy Jones moved to deny the request, seconded by Commissioner Kyunna Gates. The Planning Commission's denial is a recommendation, with the final decision resting with the Walls Mayor and Board of Aldermen. While an earlier report indicated an Oct. 6 vote, no formal date has yet been set for the aldermen's consideration.
