Pennsylvania leaders discuss community concerns over future AI data center development

Data center development and its impact on energy costs and local communities have emerged as a significant issue in Pennsylvania's gubernatorial election. Current State Treasurer and Republican candidate Stacey Garrity is actively calling for a pause on all new data center development across the Commonwealth.
In contrast, the Shapiro Administration asserts it has implemented rigorous new "guardrails" for data center projects. Lieutenant Governor Austin Davis explained that this shift in policy reflects an evolving understanding of data centers' benefits and drawbacks, as well as a response to community concerns. Governor Josh Shapiro had previously welcomed new data center projects to the state.
Garrity, however, criticized the administration's change in stance, highlighting earlier contracts signed with Amazon for data center projects that included tax deals without requirements for the centers to address energy, water concerns, or secure community agreements. After conducting five listening sessions statewide, Garrity concluded that a pause is necessary to allow stakeholders, including township supervisors, local solicitors, and first responders, sufficient time to establish proper protections for ratepayers and communities, ensuring projects are a net benefit.
