Eolian's battery storage plant in Licking County could kick off building spree in northeast US
Eolian is constructing Ohio's largest battery storage plant, the Flint Grid project, in Licking County to stabilize the electricity grid. Located near New Albany's data centers, the 200 megawatt-per-hour plant will supply power to the PJM Interconnection grid, which serves 13 states. This project aims to prevent brownouts and blackouts as data center demand continues to strain the grid and has received approval from PJM and the Ohio Power Siting Board.
Eolian, a California-based battery storage company, is developing the Flint Grid project in Licking County, Ohio, poised to become the state's largest battery plant of its kind. The 200 megawatt-per-hour facility is designed to bolster the electricity grid amidst growing demand from data centers.
While situated near a cluster of hyperscale data centers in New Albany, the energy stored by Flint Grid will serve the broader PJM Interconnection grid, which spans 13 states and serves 65 million people. Eric Stoutenburg, Eolian's Chief Development Officer, emphasized that this technology will help prevent power outages by injecting stored electricity into the grid during periods of high demand, such as extreme weather conditions.
The project is significant as the first of its kind to receive approval from both PJM and the Ohio Power Siting Board, with operations expected to commence next year. Stoutenburg anticipates a rapid expansion of similar energy storage initiatives across the PJM region and Ohio, positioning Eolian's Flint Grid as a pioneering endeavor in the northeast US.
