TxDOT makes traffic improvements in Claude as data center construction continues
TxDOT has implemented traffic safety improvements in Claude, Texas, on State Highway 207 and FM 1151 due to increased vehicle traffic from ongoing data center construction. The surge in traffic has led to a rise in accidents, prompting collaborations between TxDOT, Armstrong County, and local school officials to ensure community and student safety during the projected two years of construction.
TxDOT has initiated several traffic safety enhancements along State Highway 207 and FM 1151 in Claude, Texas, in response to a significant increase in vehicle traffic attributed to ongoing data center construction off Lima Road. Armstrong County Sheriff Melissa Anderson reported a dramatic rise in accidents, from a previous average of two to three per month to two to three per day, directly linked to the construction-related traffic.
In response, TxDOT public information officer Jason Britsch stated that the agency is collaborating with county and data center officials to address the traffic conditions. Measures implemented include reduced speed limits on affected highways, the deployment of radar trailers to monitor driver speeds, and repainting roadway striping for improved visibility. Additionally, TxDOT worked with the data center developer to add a dedicated turn-only lane for construction traffic.
These changes coincide with the start of the new school year for Claude ISD, adding school-related traffic to already congested roads. Superintendent Brent Kirkland emphasized student and family safety as a top priority, announcing a new school zone on FM 1151 and urging drivers to adhere to speed limits and watch for pedestrians. Construction at the data center is projected to continue for up to two more years, with TxDOT committed to ongoing monitoring and adjustments to traffic management.
