What are the environmental impacts of a data center?
An online meeting hosted by the Sierra Club Iowa Chapter examined environmental and public-health concerns associated with rapidly expanding hyperscale data centers. Speakers cited electricity demand, fossil-fuel and nuclear generation, water consumption, noise, heat islands and limited regulation, while Sioux County considers an ordinance that would limit facility size and require environmental protections.
The Sierra Club Iowa Chapter hosted an informational meeting on the environmental and public-health effects of hyperscale data centers. Physicians for Social Responsibility executive director Brian Campbell said the rapid growth of large facilities is increasing electricity demand, delaying fossil-fuel plant closures and potentially driving new gas and nuclear generation. He also cited concerns about heat islands, water use, noise, air pollution and regulatory gaps.
Sierra Club Iowa Chapter associate Jessica Mazour said Iowa lacks statewide standards for setbacks, noise, ratepayer protections and transparency, leaving local governments to respond. She said at least 25 Iowa counties have enacted moratoriums while studying the industry. In Sioux County, the Board of Supervisors voted 4-1 on a second reading of a proposed ordinance that would limit data center sites to 25 megawatts and require measures including closed-loop water systems and noise controls. The article also noted that Google and QTS are developing large data center complexes in the Cedar Rapids area.
