Residents gathered at Sandy Grove Baptist Church in Lumberton to discuss a proposed data center and raise concerns about its potential effects on water supplies, noise levels, public health and the environment. Raven Powers, a Lumberton resident, criticized local officials for not conducting sufficient research into the project’s possible impacts, particularly as the area faces drought conditions.

Councilman John Canty said city leaders had examined a data center in Maiden, North Carolina, and found no significant health or noise problems, while identifying potential financial benefits for Lumberton. Residents called for safeguards, including locating the facility near I-95 and U.S. 74, but some said they would remain opposed even if the city adopts an ordinance. The data center ordinance is scheduled for consideration by the Lumberton City Council at its Monday meeting.
