Rezoning unanimously approved for data center in rural Lake County
The Lake County Council in Indiana unanimously approved the rezoning for a proposed $5 billion data center project by Sentinel Data Centers in Eagle Creek Township. This decision was made despite significant opposition from local residents who packed the meeting in Crown Point. A further public hearing is anticipated before the Lake County Board of Zoning Appeals for a special exception request.
The Lake County Council in Crown Point, Indiana, unanimously approved the rezoning necessary for a proposed $5 billion data center project in Eagle Creek Township. The vote was 6-0, occurring on Tuesday during a packed meeting where many data center opponents were present.
Sentinel Data Centers, a New York-based company, identified a parcel on the south side of State Road 2, east of Clay Street and nearly two miles east of Interstate 65, for its new facility. The project had previously received a favorable recommendation from the city's plan commission earlier this month.
Despite the council's approval, the proposal has generated opposition from some Hobart residents. A subsequent public hearing is expected to be held this summer before the Lake County Board of Zoning Appeals when Sentinel Data Centers requests a special exception for the project.
