Irondale mayor: Data center ordinance is a precaution
Irondale is developing a data center ordinance focused on water and power usage and requiring prospective developers to present projects to the City Council before construction. Mayor James Stewart Jr. said no data center has been proposed and described the ordinance as a precaution; it is scheduled for a vote in December.
Irondale Mayor James Stewart Jr. said the city has spent seven months developing an ordinance to regulate potential data center projects. The proposed rules would address water and power consumption and require developers to present their plans to the Irondale City Council before building.
Stewart said no company has approached the city and no data center project is currently under consideration. He said Irondale chose to pursue regulations rather than begin with a moratorium because officials felt prepared to establish an ordinance, which is expected to come before the council for a vote in December. WBRC also reported reactions from area residents.
