The Oregon Public Utility Commission has paused a proposed PGE rate hike that would have increased power rates for data centers by 29%. This decision, stemming from the Power Act, aims to ensure large energy users pay their fair share, with a final decision expected by July 7th.

The Oregon Public Utility Commission (OPUC) has voted to temporarily halt new rate changes proposed by Portland General Electric (PGE).

These rates, which were scheduled to begin this week, included a significant 29% increase in power costs for data centers. In contrast, other customers would have seen their rates decrease by 1% to 4%. The OPUC's decision to pause the implementation, which is expected to last about a month, was made to allow analysts more time to finalize the details.

This proposed rate restructuring is a direct outcome of the Power Act, a piece of legislation passed last year. The Act's primary goal is to ensure that major energy consumers, such as data centers, contribute equitably to electricity costs. A conclusive decision on the new rate plan is anticipated on July 7th.
