Meta has announced a substantial expansion of its Hyperion data center project in Richland Parish, Louisiana, projecting an investment of over $50 billion. The facility, originally planned as a 2 GW data center, is now expected to be a 5 GW supercluster tailored for artificial intelligence workloads. This revised figure is significantly higher than the $27 billion disclosed in October 2024 when Meta partnered with Blue Owl Capital for its build-out and management.

The project benefits from generous state support, including a 20-year sales tax exemption for data centers built before 2029, signed into law by Louisiana Republican Governor Jeff Landry. Governor Landry, who will host a press event in Baton Rouge, emphasized the economic benefits for both local government and the state. Meta stated that it covers the full costs of energy, water, and related infrastructure, ensuring consumers do not bear these expenses. Since construction began in December 2024, local businesses have received over $1.6 billion in contracts, with Meta planning to invest over $1 billion in local infrastructure improvements, including roads and water systems.

The expansion comes as Meta intensifies its artificial intelligence infrastructure development, following strong stock market performance driven by the release of new AI models. While the Hyperion project is expected to reach 2 GW by 2030, a timeline for the full 5 GW completion has not been provided.
