The Lansing City Council approved a 182-day temporary moratorium on new data center development, giving the city time to draft new regulations. This decision follows a previous proposal by Deep Green that was withdrawn due to public opposition. The moratorium aims to assess how data centers fit into Lansing's future, though some warn it could deter investment.

The Lansing City Council has enacted a temporary 182-day moratorium on new data center development, effective immediately. The vote on Monday was 7-1, pausing new building permits and zoning applications specifically for data centers while the city works to draft permanent regulations for future projects.

This move comes months after U.K.-based Deep Green withdrew its proposal for a downtown Lansing data center, citing public opposition as a key factor. Supporters of the moratorium argue it provides essential time for the city to strategically plan the integration of data centers into its economic and environmental landscape.

However, the decision faced criticism, with Councilmember Jeremy Garza casting the lone dissenting vote. Garza contended that singling out data centers for a moratorium was unfair, highlighting that other businesses also present noise and water concerns. Speakers during the public hearing also voiced divided opinions, with some emphasizing the city's need for control over development and others warning against the potential for discouraging vital investment and economic diversification in Lansing.
