Meta Commits to Texas Data Center Standards
Meta has committed to new state standards regarding data center electricity costs in Texas, following Governor Abbott's directive. However, El Paso residents and a local organizer remain concerned that existing agreements, particularly with Wurlwide and El Paso Electric, do not fully protect them from potential cost burdens or grid impacts, advocating for amendments.
Governor Abbott directed the Public Utilities Commission of Texas and the Electric Reliability Council of Texas to ensure data center costs do not burden Texas residents. Meta has committed to comply with these new state standards, which aim to lower residential electric bills and require data centers to fund their own electric infrastructure while minimizing community impacts. A city spokesperson noted that the Governor's announcement aligns with protections the City of El Paso had already advocated for through its recent data center policy work.
Despite Meta's commitment, El Paso residents and local organizer Veronica Carbajal express ongoing concerns. Carbajal highlighted that an existing agreement with Wurlwide and El Paso Electric remains unchanged, potentially leaving residents vulnerable to increased costs. She urged El Paso Electric and Meta to amend their application immediately to guarantee Meta's ownership of generators forever and prevent their connection to the public grid.
