Statesboro City Manager Charles Penny said the city has approved a zoning change for a proposed data center on Burkhalter Road, but no special use permit has been approved. He rejected claims that the project was being advanced secretly and said any completed application would undergo public review by the Planning Commission and City Council.

Statesboro City Manager Charles Penny addressed public criticism of a proposed data center on Burkhalter Road during the Nov. 3 City Council meeting. He said the city adopted data center regulations in June and approved an office zoning designation for the property, but the zoning change does not authorize construction.

Penny said the developers submitted an incomplete special use permit application, and the city has not approved additional development activity or installed infrastructure to support the project. He rejected allegations of behind-the-scenes advancement and said any completed application would receive public notice and review by the Statesboro Planning Commission and City Council.
