
Heat waves and data centers push power grids to limit
Record-breaking heat waves across the U.S. are severely straining regional electricity grids, which are simultaneously experiencing a surge in demand from data centers and the artificial intelligence sector. Experts warn that grids are reaching tipping points, necessitating massive investments and years of upgrades to ensure reliability. PJM Interconnection, serving a vast region including Virginia's Data Center Alley, has issued multiple emergency alerts and plans an auction to ensure data centers cover their energy needs.
U.S. power grids are experiencing unprecedented strain as back-to-back heat waves coincide with surging electricity demands from data centers and the artificial intelligence sector. Regional grid operators, including the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) and Southwest Power Pool, have issued emergency alerts, with PJM Interconnection LLC, serving 67 million people from Chicago to Washington D.C. (including Virginia’s Data Center Alley), facing particular challenges. Timothy Fox, an analyst at ClearView Energy Partners LLC, noted that RTOs are expressing concerns about reaching tipping points, indicating that decades-old transmission equipment and infrastructure are struggling to meet the new demands.
Usage on PJM's grid soared to an unprecedented 168 gigawatts on July 2, surpassing a two-decade-old record. While the temperatures were high, meteorologists Ed Vallee of Atmospheric G2 and Bradley Harvey of Vaisala Xweather indicated the weather itself was not historically extreme, but increased humidity due to climate change is exacerbating conditions. This summer's demand records have occurred during notably warm, rather than historically extreme, weather.
In response to the strain, PJM issued multiple emergency alerts and sought U.S. Energy Department permission for data centers to deploy backup generators. Peter Lake, outgoing senior director of power at the White House’s National Energy Dominance Council, suggested PJM's flurry of alerts points to deep stability issues, warning the grid is not poised for growth. PJM plans to hold an emergency auction post-summer to ensure data centers contribute to the generation costs they incur. Other operators like Electric Reliability Council of Texas (Ercot) and MISO are adding generation capacity and working with regulators to maintain reliability, but experts like Gary Cunningham, director of market research for Tradition Energy, emphasize that upgrading brittle grids will require years and trillions in investment.
