Dover passes temporary ban on AI data centers
The Dover City Council unanimously passed an 18-month moratorium on applications for AI data centers within city limits. Council members cited the need to study infrastructure capacity, potential impacts, and rising energy prices before considering future proposals.
The Dover City Council unanimously approved an 18-month pause on applications for AI data centers while city officials study their potential effects and determine whether local infrastructure can support them. The city has not received a formal application, though data center companies have contacted officials about project feasibility.
Councilwoman Donyale Hall said the moratorium will allow staff to gather information and develop an approach for evaluating data center impacts. Councilman David Anderson supported the pause amid concerns about energy prices, while Councilman Andre Boggerty called for a town hall focused on data centers and Councilman Roy Sudler Jr. questioned whether additional staff would be needed for the research.
