Community reacts to new bill on data centers
Congressman Rob Bresnahan introduced the Local Control Protection Act, a bill aimed at returning decision-making power over data center developments to local leaders in northeastern Pennsylvania. The proposed legislation seeks to prevent large corporations from overturning local decisions and ensures data center projects provide community benefits. While some residents support the bill as a positive step, others believe it comes too late.
Congressman Rob Bresnahan (R), representing Pennsylvania's 8th District, introduced the "Local Control Protection Act" on Thursday, a bill designed to empower local leaders in northeastern Pennsylvania with greater decision-making authority regarding data center developments.
The legislation aims to prevent large corporations from litigating and overturning local decisions concerning data center projects. Additionally, it seeks to ensure that any approved developments provide jobs for area residents and hold data centers responsible for utility and environmental impacts.
Community reactions to the proposed bill are mixed. Mike Fallo, a Mount Cobb resident, expressed support, stating that municipalities should have a choice in local development. However, Jessup resident Michael Cappellini believes the bill is "too late," noting that citizens have been seeking federal help to stop such developments since their inception. Cappellini also voiced concerns about the bill's language, emphasizing the need for time to understand the issues fully.
Representative Bresnahan stated that data center projects must have a "net-negative impact on the community" if they proceed, but the ultimate fate of the bill remains uncertain.
