Residents speak out against potential data center in Federalsburg
Hundreds of residents in Federalsburg, Maryland, packed a public information session to oppose a proposed data center, expressing frustration over unanswered questions. The project, called Fieldstone Technology Center, is in its early stages with Wright Road LLC as the developer, advised by Landwright Power Strategies. Concerns were raised regarding noise, water usage, air pollution, and local job opportunities.
Hundreds of Federalsburg residents attended a public information session concerning a proposed data center, with many expressing strong opposition and frustration over unanswered questions. The session, co-hosted by Federalsburg leaders, the potential developer Wright Road LLC, and the Maryland Tech Council, introduced preliminary plans for the "Fieldstone Technology Center" at the town's industrial park.
David Wright, founder of Landwright Power Strategies, the strategic development advisor, presented a conceptual diagram of the campus, which would include an energy district and on-site power generation using natural gas. He emphasized responsible development, minimal water usage with closed-loop systems, noise mitigation, and economic benefits like job creation and tax revenue.
However, residents voiced significant concerns regarding the data center's potential impact on local jobs, noise levels, air pollution, and especially water usage, fearing well depletion. Wright clarified that the project would not connect to town water and would implement strong water restrictions, but could not guarantee against all medical concerns or commit to an escrow fund for affected wells. Many attendees, including longtime resident Steve Thomas, felt their questions were not adequately addressed by the developers.
