Community backlash ended Mahomet's discussions with potential data center developer Clean Cloud Energy, while residents continue pushing for strict data center regulations in Champaign County. Community opposition ended Mahomet's talks with potential data center developer Clean Cloud Energy, prompting renewed calls from Champaign County residents for stronger safeguards. Residents cited potential wildlife, environmental and electricity impacts, while county officials said an outright ban could expose the county to legal challenges.
The Champaign County Data Center Task Force is reviewing an ordinance that would establish limits on the size and location of large data centers. The proposal must be approved by the Champaign Zoning Board of Appeals and the Champaign County Board before the current ban expires in mid-April 2027. Task force members said the county's authority does not extend into municipalities such as Mahomet.
Planning and Zoning Director John Hall said ABEI Energy has contacted the county about a potential site outside Tolono, while Denver-based developer Nodiac inquired about a site outside Sidney. Neither company has submitted a formal application.
