San Francisco-based Beale Infrastructure announced on March 30 that it has withdrawn its plans for 'Project Atlas,' a proposed data center development south of Coweta, Oklahoma. The company had intended to build the facility on 270 acres located between Highways 72 and 51B in Wagoner County.
Beale Infrastructure cited its commitment to being a "community-first developer" in its statement regarding the withdrawal, adding that it looks forward to pursuing community investments in other Oklahoma locations. The decision comes after significant public opposition from Coweta residents who voiced concerns about the project during city council meetings, with some even calling for the resignation of the mayor and vice mayor and the firing of the city manager over the handling of the proposal.
The Coweta City Council had previously postponed a vote on the project's rezoning request and a new date was never set. Supporters of Project Atlas had emphasized the hundreds of jobs it would have created for the city. Project Atlas was one of several data center developments proposed across Oklahoma, a state that has attracted investments from cloud computing and artificial intelligence companies, including Google's substantial data center presence in Muskogee County.
