Escambia County commissioners unanimously vote to ban data centers

Escambia County Commissioners in Florida held a meeting with a large turnout from residents expressing strong opposition to data centers. Commissioner Ashlee Hofberger noted the community's involvement in advocating against the development. Following public input, the county commissioners unanimously voted to ban data centers, with Commissioner Hofberger clarifying that there was no existing allowable use for data centers within current parameters.

Residents voiced concerns that data centers pose a danger to public health and are devastating to the environment and local wildlife. Commissioners Mike Kohler and Lumon May clarified misconceptions during the meeting, distinguishing between hospital technology rooms and actual data centers to address public confusion.

A public hearing is scheduled for August 6th, where residents will have the opportunity to share final thoughts before a permanent ordinance is adopted in Escambia County.
