The Wisconsin Rapids Planning Commission recently voted 7-0 against recommending a conditional use permit for a proposed data center project. Despite this unanimous vote, the proposal is not definitively rejected, as the planning commission can only issue a recommendation, not a final approval or denial. The ultimate decision on the conditional use permit will rest with the Common Council, which is scheduled to vote on October 20th. While the Common Council typically aligns with planning commission recommendations, they are not obligated to do so and would need a strong justification to go against a denial recommendation.

State Representative Scott Crew has publicly urged the Common Council to deny the application, citing concerns over how PNK Group has handled the process, stating a lack of trust in their future choices. Representatives for Anton Veronin, who proposed the project on behalf of PNK Group, countered the commission's claims of an incomplete application, asserting a "thoughtful and thorough application" and expressing commitment to address identified issues.

In a separate but related development, the planning commission is set to meet on October 5th to vote on recommending a moratorium for data centers. Representative Crew supports this measure, believing it would allow for a more comprehensive discussion on suitable development for the site. PNK Group reiterated its commitment to working constructively with the city, suggesting they would consider resubmitting an application if the current one is denied.
