Data Center construction in Madison?
Madison is considering where and how large data centers could be allowed after the city’s one-year moratorium expires in January. Proposed rules would limit facilities to industrial areas on the far east and southeast sides and impose noise restrictions, with a public information meeting scheduled to gather feedback.
The City of Madison is evaluating potential locations and regulations for large data centers ahead of the scheduled expiration of its one-year moratorium in January. The proposed framework would allow facilities measuring roughly 50,000 to 100,000 square feet only in certain industrial areas on the city’s far east and southeast sides, while also limiting noise.
City Cast Madison Executive Producer Hayley Sperling noted that no specific data center construction projects are currently planned and that Madison already has several data centers. The city planned a virtual public information meeting on Oct. 27 to explain the proposals and collect public input, particularly from residents living near the potential development areas.
