The tech giant is currently in the early stages of exploring a 900-acre annexed site on the town's outskirts. The proposed data center is touted to bring new tax revenue for schools and essential services, high-quality permanent jobs, thousands of construction roles, and opportunities for workforce development and education, according to Google's website. The company emphasizes its commitment to tailoring the project to Salix's needs and providing transparent updates on milestones and community developments.
However, the prospect of the data center has elicited strong and divided opinions among Salix residents. In July, opponents submitted a petition with over 70 signatures, advocating for a one-year moratorium to facilitate impact studies, update zoning ordinances, assess public safety, and preserve local character. The Salix City Council subsequently failed to approve this moratorium in an August 3-2 vote.
The community's divided stance is visually evident, with both pro and anti-data center signs displayed in yards and a prominent pro-data center billboard. Over 100 residents have reportedly attended recent city council meetings to voice their perspectives, highlighting concerns over potential impacts on homeowners alongside enthusiasm for potential economic benefits.
