A significant data center project in Birmingham, Alabama, has taken a step forward with the issuance of a $7 million building permit for a 75-acre facility. The project, located off Lakeshore Parkway at the former Regions Lakeshore Operations Center site, will be operated by Amsterdam-based technology company Nebius. Nebius had applied for the permit in January.
The permit was issued to Birmingham's Hoar Construction, which is part of the larger development. The data center is designed to support advanced artificial intelligence workloads and high-performance computing systems. This permit was among 22 new building permits issued statewide for projects exceeding $1 million, with three of those in the Birmingham metro area.
