Charlotte City Council will hold a public hearing on extending the city's pause on new data center construction through Oct. 11, 2027. The proposed extension would give city staff and a 19-person task group more time to study data center impacts and develop regulatory recommendations.

The Charlotte City Council scheduled an Oct. 12 public hearing on extending the city's 150-day data center moratorium for another 11 months, through Oct. 11, 2027. The current pause expires Nov. 5, and residents will be able to address the council before a vote.

Councilwoman Dimple Ajmera said the decision could affect the environment, residents, utility ratepayers, taxpayers and quality of life. City officials say the moratorium is allowing staff to research data center impacts and consider standards based on facility type and size. A 19-person task group created in August is helping develop recommendations, but Deputy City Manager Alyson Craig said additional research and consultations are needed before proposed ordinance changes are ready.
