Buxton voters approve temporary data center ban - Portland Press Herald
Buxton voters approved a 180-day moratorium on data center development at a special town meeting. The pause, effective Aug. 12, gives town officials time to draft regulations before any facilities are proposed.
Buxton voters approved a 180-day ban on large-scale data centers during a special town meeting attended by about 60 residents. The moratorium took effect Aug. 12 and applies even though no data center has yet been proposed in the town.
Town officials will use the pause to develop an ordinance regulating potential data center projects. Buxton joins several southern Maine communities that have enacted similar restrictions amid concerns about natural-resource consumption and infrastructure impacts, following Gov. Janet Mills' veto of a bill that would have imposed a temporary statewide restriction.
