Republican gubernatorial candidate Zach Lahn of Belle Plaine, Iowa, recently proposed a temporary moratorium on data center projects statewide during a meeting with the Iowa Association of Business and Industry in West Des Moines. Lahn emphasized the need for new regulations to ensure data centers provide tangible benefits to Iowans, citing concerns over agricultural land loss, environmental impact, and potential increases in consumer electricity bills. He presented an example of a data center developer out-of-state that contributed to improving a community's drinking water, suggesting this as a model for future developments in Iowa.
While Lahn did not detail the conditions for lifting such a pause, his campaign was sought for further information. Nicole Crain, President of the Iowa Association of Business and Industry, stated the group's neutrality on the issue, prioritizing safe, affordable energy, job creation, and infrastructure investment. Separately, Democratic gubernatorial candidate Rob Sand has also advocated for changes, including mandatory public hearings for data center projects and ensuring that data centers bear the costs of any increased electricity expenses to prevent higher consumer bills.
