Palmyra and Hannibal officials address data center rumors
Marion County, Missouri, has enacted a moratorium on data center construction due to a lack of necessary infrastructure and is working on developing new guidelines. Palmyra officials clarify that no data centers are currently planned for their city. Both Palmyra and Hannibal are forming task forces to proactively prepare for future data center proposals, recognizing their independent zoning authority from the county.
Marion County, Missouri, has imposed a moratorium on data center construction, according to Presiding Commissioner David Lomax. Lomax stated that the county currently lacks the necessary infrastructure to support large-scale data centers and is in the process of developing comprehensive guidelines, similar to those established for solar and wind projects.
Despite the county-wide moratorium, officials in Palmyra, Missouri, have confirmed that no data centers are planned for their city. Palmyra has proactively formed a task force to prepare for any future data center proposals, aiming to ensure the city is well-informed before making decisions.
City Attorney James Lemon, who represents both Palmyra and Hannibal, emphasized that both cities' elected officials are aware of issues data centers have caused in other regions. Lemon also noted that while eminent domain concerns would be minor, Hannibal would not support efforts to seize residents' land, suggesting that areas like the local industrial park are more suitable for such development. Both city and county officials are focused on learning about data center impacts to protect local interests.
