Effingham County Commissioners are scheduled to vote on site plans for OpenAI's proposed data center in Springfield, including two data center buildings, support facilities and more than 1,600 parking spaces. The project would employ more than 1,000 people, avoid about 70% of the site's wetlands and provide more than $20 million for wetland mitigation, but its potential impacts on power, water and the environment have drawn concerns.

Effingham County Commissioners are scheduled to vote on OpenAI's site plans for a proposed data center in Springfield. The project would include two 35-foot data center buildings, a warehouse, operations facilities, cooling equipment, substations and more than 1,600 parking spaces, with OpenAI anticipating more than 1,000 jobs.

OpenAI says the design will avoid 70% of wetlands on the property and includes setbacks, buffers, vegetation retention, lighting controls and noise measures. The company has committed more than $20 million to federally approved wetland conservation banks for mitigation.

A Development of Regional Impact report identified potential effects on power, water and the environment. One Hundred Miles, a coastal Georgia environmental group, questioned whether the proposal provides adequate detail about backup power and grid resilience, while the county commission prepares to consider the plans after an earlier postponement for additional review.
