Project Blue data center could use up to 31 million gallons of water per year
The Project Blue data center in Pima County, Arizona, is projected to use up to 31 million gallons of water annually. This has sparked significant community opposition, with residents protesting the development. The Tucson City Council is expected to vote on the project in August.
The Project Blue data center, currently under construction in Pima County, Arizona, faces scrutiny over its potential annual water consumption, estimated at up to 31 million gallons. Doug MacEachern, a spokesperson for the Arizona Department of Water Resources, confirmed that Bobcat Tucson Water LLC, an entity linked to Beale Infrastructure, applied for and received approval for two commercial wells for the project in January. These wells operate under three existing legal groundwater rights agreements.
Community members have actively protested Project Blue, filling Tucson City Council chambers with signs of opposition during a study session. Tucson Mayor Regina Romero and the City Council are scheduled to hold their initial vote on the project in August, following community meetings where Beale Infrastructure representatives presented information to Tucson officials and residents.
