Meta has significantly expanded its investment in the El Paso data center project, increasing its commitment from an initial $1.5 billion to $10 billion. This substantial increase will lead to a boost in job creation, with construction jobs rising from 1,500 to 4,000, and permanent positions doubling from 150 to 300. The data center, currently under construction at the intersection of Stan Roberts Senior Avenue and US 54, began its development last October. Gary DeMasi, Vice President of Development and Strategy for Data Centers at Meta, confirmed that the company is working with El Paso Electric and El Paso Water to cover the full costs of services utilized. Meta also emphasized its plans for a low water use design, stating the facility will not primarily rely on water for cooling. Additionally, Meta is providing a $500,000 grant to a local school district to support students' educational and work-related needs. Local leaders, including the Borderplex Alliance, highlight the importance of such investments for the region's economic diversification and future growth, particularly in the AI sector, noting the creation of high-wage jobs that will transform the economy for the better.
