Belvidere residents oppose potential data center development, and Mayor Morris's thoughts

Roughly 100 residents of Belvidere, Illinois, attended a City Council meeting to voice their strong opposition to a potential data center development. Approximately a dozen community members spoke during public comments, even though the topic was not formally listed on the meeting's agenda. Residents expressed concerns about the impact on their rural town and agricultural community, with one resident, Carter Half, stating he might not be able to raise his children safely in town if the data center is built.

Belvidere Mayor Clinton Morris addressed the assembly, confirming that an initial introduction between the city and a potential developer, DATA WATTS, for a new development including a data center, took place in early 2025. However, Mayor Morris clarified that neither he nor city staff have had any subsequent discussions with the developer regarding the proposed data center. Discussions have focused on managing property utilities, and any action on the development itself would require proper public notice and meetings in accordance with city ordinances and state law. The proposed development is reportedly located just outside city limits on Snow Road near Interstate 90.
