Gov: Coweta County Commissioners
The Coweta County Commissioners have approved the rezoning of an 800-acre forest in Newnan, Georgia, paving the way for the "Project Sail" data center campus. The controversial project is set to bring nine data center buildings and two substations to the rural area, making it one of the largest data center developments in Georgia.
Local residents, organized under the "Citizens for Rural Coweta" group, vociferously opposed the project, collecting over 8,000 signatures. Residents like Melanie Tomlinson expressed concerns about the rural character of the area, the proximity to over 1,200 homes, and potential conflicts with the county's comprehensive plan, urging the county not to rush into such a large development.
However, developers, represented by Prologis, highlighted the site's unique suitability due to its proximity to Georgia Power infrastructure, calling it a "rare find." The $17 billion project will develop 20% of the 800-acre site. The rezoning approval includes 17 strict requirements covering aspects like traffic mitigation and land preservation.
